Summary

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Six has completed and is planning future projects to address capacity improvements along State Road (SR) 826/Palmetto Expressway in Miami-Dade County. They include the following:

The Palmetto Capacity Project

This project extends from south of NW 36 Street to north of NW 154 Street/Miami Lakes Drive. It includes modifying the flyover from westbound SR 932/NW 103 Street/W 49 Street to the southbound SR 826 and widen the SR 826 bridge over SR 932/NW 103 Street/W 49 Street to create a permanent, additional, non-tolled general-purpose lane. Construction began April 2022. Construction is scheduled to end winter 2025.

Palmetto Expressway Bridge Repair Project

Workers began a bridge repair project the week of July 5, 2022, on SR 826/Palmetto Expressway northbound at NW 114 Street/W 60 Street. This project cost an estimated $204,787 and took approximately three months to complete.

This project is a separate project within the limits of the Palmetto Expressway Capacity Project. It includes removing damaged concrete, repairing and replacing the barrier wall, and removing the temporary barrier wall and crash cushions.

Construction will be done in stages with temporary lane closures and detours scheduled to avoid special community events and peak periods of traffic. Temporary sidewalk closures and detours along the frontage roads will be in place when necessary. Access to and from adjacent neighborhoods and businesses will be maintained during construction. This project was completed in October 2022.

The Northbound Palmetto Modifications Project

This project converted one northbound express lane to a non-tolled general-purpose lane, removed the existing express lane entrance north of NW 36 Street, reducing the express lanes from two to one lane from the Flagler entrance to the Okeechobee Road entrance, and relocated the express lane entrance from north of Okeechobee Road to south of the northbound Okeechobee Road entrance ramp. The project also relocated the express lane exit from south of W 154 Street to SR 932/NW 103 Street/W 49 Street. This project was completed in 2020.

The East/West Palmetto Design Project

This project included six segmented projects from SR 93/I-75 to west of NW 17 Avenue. This project is currently not funded for future development.

The Palmetto Expressway South PD&E Study

This study from US 1/SR 5/Dixie Highway to NW 25 Street, a distance of approximately eight miles, is proposing corridor improvements that will add highway and interchange capacity and interchange improvements.
